Dano is one of Europe's highest inhabited villages. The very highest is only a few hours walk away. In winter, access to the region is completely blocked by snow and the village becomes frozen.

Iason Tataraidze remained alone in the village for 20 frigid winters to guard the herd of cows which remain and to maintain the buildings in the village.

At first he didn't have even a radio, but eventually these were brought in along with solar panels. The first month is always the hardest. Iason tells me that he went half mad every winter.

The role has now been passed to a younger man.
